Finding reputable tradesmen – check their accreditations
In our last blog, we explained some of the steps you can take to check a tradesman is reputable and skilled before you engage them. And in this post, we’re going to take a quick look at what accreditations and memberships your builder should have.
Consumer Protection Association
The Consumer Protection Association is a top UK consumer protection agency. It’s a nationally recognised organisation that has been helping consumers and accredited home improvement installers to connect for over twenty years.
Being a CPA member shows that a tradesman is trustworthy and takes pride in a job well done. The CPA only works with proven and accredited installers and vet them for professional competence and integrity throughout the life of their membership. This assures customers that while they are working with a CPA member, they benefit from protection throughout and after the build or installation process.
Local Authority Building Control (LABC) is a not-for-profit membership organisation that represents and covers all local authority building control teams in England and Wales. LABC works with manufacturers, trade bodies, professional institutions and other recognised bodies to ensure that working standards are well-defined and that work complies with building regulations and standards across the UK.
Local Authority Building Control is responsible for making sure that buildings are safe for people to use and live in. This is done by ensuring that the building companies are working to the latest standards of the Building Regulations. Working with builders who are LABC members ensures they’ll provide you with the necessary compliance work. It also protects you from cowboy builders.
Checkatrade is one of the most trusted customer platforms when it comes to checking a tradesman’s reputation. Checkatrade runs strict background checks on tradesmen before they can become members. And the public feedback ensures that only reliable and trusted tradesmen get work through Checkatrade.
Members give out feedback cards with every job and the reviews are published online for all to see. The reviews of previous customers give an indication of the quality of the work of the tradesmen for future customers.
Trading Standards organisations often offer approved accreditation schemes. This means those accredited have worked closely with the trading standards team to ensure that they operate to the standard set by the team.
Surrey Trading Standards provides reassurance that you are choosing a reputable trader who has passed rigorous background checks. Surrey Trading Standards ensures the members are operating in a legal, honest, and fair way. They provide you with choice of approved traders through their partnership with Checkatrade, Trustmark and Buy with Confidence.
